The future of Washington State’s wine industry depends on sustainable business and winemaking practices.
To protect and expand our reputation for producing high quality wines, particularly in these times of rapid growth, we must use management practices that respect the long term viability of our wineries and the surrounding environment. Developing management practices that are environmentally sound, economically feasible and socially equitable, builds a solid framework to achieve sustainability and carry our businesses into the future.

Winerywise™ currently includes 9 chapter topics. Intended to be a dynamic Guide, additional topics will be added as needed or identified by the industry.

Each of these chapters was written by a wine industry member – winery owners, winery personnel, wine education and researchers - as we wanted to develop these chapters from a practical operations standpoint. Additionally, each chapter has been rigorously reviewed by a number of experts specializing in sustainable practices pertaining to these topics.
The objective of Winerywise™, is to help you through the process of improving sustainability in one or all facets of your winery. If you’re building a new winery, you’ll learn about how to select LEED AP certified architects. Existing wineries can learn how to increase their energy efficiency, and what programs are available to assist with funding of more energy efficient equipment. You can also learn how to promote your sustainability efforts to your customers and neighbors through community outreach.
While the Winerywise™ Guide is a holistic approach to winery sustainability, it does allow you to select specific topics in which you would like to initiate or improve sustainability practices. For example, you may be most interested in becoming more sustainable in your water management practices – simply go to ‘Water Management’ and work through the chapter as described in ‘Using Winerywise™’. If you decide to incorporate more sustainable practices in all of your winery operations, and/or seek to achieve third-party certification of sustainability, follow all of the Guide chapters.
